I get that. I wouldn't just add your friends to your list. Instead, I'd send them a regular email saying "Hey, I'm starting an email list [insert fun description]. If you want me to add you, just let me know" - something like that. This way they're opting in. It's one way to kick off your list, anyway.

However, if even that feels weird, just skip it. Start your list, create your opt-in and let people discover it.
